The Science Delusion

This brief presentation by Rupert Sheldrake at a TEDx talk was particularly notable due to his articulate approach toward questioning some of the fundamental “facts” of science. The subject matter ruffled feathers so much that the presentation was removed from the official TED Talk channels.

BIO:
Rupert Sheldrake, Ph.D. (born 28 June 1942) is a biologist and author of more than 80 scientific papers and ten books. A former Research Fellow of the Royal Society, he studied natural sciences at Cambridge University, where he was a Scholar of Clare College, took a double first class honours degree and was awarded the University Botany Prize. He then studied philosophy and history of science at Harvard University, where he was a Frank Knox Fellow, before returning to Cambridge, where he took a Ph.D. in biochemistry. He was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, where he was Director of Studies in biochemistry and cell biology. As the Rosenheim Research Fellow of the Royal Society, he carried out research on the development of plants and the ageing of cells in the Department of Biochemistry at Cambridge University.

I am by all practical cttaonnoion, an atheist; last night I attended a lecture by the good doctor Dawkins at the University of Texas at Austin. I am all for lively discussion and information but the glazed-eyed sycophants that attended, appeared more to me as if they were there to hear a sermon from a Southern Baptist preacher than to take in a scholarly lecture from a notable scientist. He and his unrelenting ego did not disappoint them. It very much smacked of a Revival Meeting and I quite expected to see someone to get up and start speaking in tongues or come down front to be healed by science, of course. I know he is doing his part to challenge Religion’ but when one man’s view of science becomes a credo it is no better than the dogmatic view it is trying to replace. Voices like Sheldrake’s need to be heard and examined in order to continue the pursuit of knowledge; we cannot just quash what we do not fully understand at the moment. Let science do its work and let the celebrities, like Dawkins accept or deny the results, and not attempt to hide what may to them be an inconvenient truth.
